Susan G. Komen® Nebraska, based in Omaha, Neb., and Susan G. Komen® South Dakota, based in Sioux Falls, S.D., announced today they have joined forces to make a bigger impact in the fight against breast cancer and will operate as one entity – Susan G. Komen® Great Plains.

The consolidated organization will serve residents in Nebraska and South Dakota with plans to expand into North Dakota in the future.

Even though the organization will soon be operating under a new name, many things will remain the same:

  • Donations will still fund local breast health education, screening, and treatment programs and national breast cancer research. In fact, 75 percent of net proceeds remain local.
  • Staff in Omaha, Neb. and Sioux Falls, S.D. will provide support in the local communities and engage supporters and volunteers. The Board of Directors will have members from both states who oversee progress toward the organization’s mission, strategy and goals.
  • Race for the Cure® events will still take place in Sioux Falls (Sept. 24, 2017) and Omaha (Oct. 8, 2017)

“We have a strong commitment to the people we serve. For that reason, it made great sense to share resources and personnel, allowing us to operate more efficiently and better serve our communities,” said Karen Daneu, CEO of Komen Great Plains who previously served as executive director of the Nebraska office.

Mary Kolsrud, executive director of Komen Great Plains, noted, “Together, we have provided funding for breast health education, screening, and treatment services for a combined 33 years.  During that time, we have enabled thousands of people to receive access to breast health programs, saving hundreds of lives.  As proud as we are about what we have accomplished separately, we are confident that working together we can increase that impact.”
