CHERYL INDELICATO, PROPRIETOR
As a member of one of California’s oldest winemaking families, Cheryl grew up among the vineyards and at the winery. Today – along with her siblings and cousins representing the third generation – she is leading the family business into a new era.
Her grandfather Gaspare Indelicato, who emigrated to California from the small village of Campobello in Italy, planted the first grapes for Delicato Family Vineyards in the spring of 1924. As stewards of prized California vineyards, Cheryl and her family continue to live up to Gaspare’s original vision of sustainable farming and quality winemaking.
After earning degrees in business and nursing and working in those fields, Cheryl returned to the winery in 1990 to help reshape Delicato Family Vineyards as a leading producer of premium and super-premium wines. Since then, she has held various management positions within the company including marketing and human resources.
Cheryl always knew that when the time was right she would create her own wine label. In early 2010, she approached veteran winemaker Alicia Ysais to collaborate. Alicia’s light touch in the cellar was exactly what she wanted for HandCraft. Inspired by the field blends common at her family’s farm table growing up, HandCraft wines are approachable, fruit forward and versatile across the menu. During blending, Cheryl and Alicia found that adding a splash of Italian varietals lifted the aromatics, a nice nod to her Italian heritage.
As part of her passion to make a positive difference in people’s lives, Cheryl created the program HandCraft Cares under the umbrella of her Inspired 365 platform where she shares healthy lifestyle tips and recipes. HandCraft Cares supports important causes with financial and in-kind contributions and has raised over $265,000 since 2012 to support breast cancer research, prevention and awareness. Cheryl is also personally involved in a number of initiatives at the community level to increase awareness and early detection of breast cancer including her leadership of Team HandCraft in multiple breast cancer awareness walks across the country, including four, 3-Day (60 mile) Races for the Cure. Cheryl has walked a total of 285 miles in the name of Breast Cancer research and awareness.
When she is not at the winery or out on the road promoting HandCraft, she enjoys spending time her kitchen and garden. Cheryl lives in Monterey, California with her husband Claude, son Dominic and pooch Lucy.
